forests. Their silk is gathered
after the moth emerges. As the caterpillars eat all
kinds of different trees, all rich in tannin, the silk
is beige to brownish toned. Pakistan's are many
varieties and shades of wild silk. Tussah is generally
stronger and more resilient than cultivated "white"
silk.
These lustrous yarns are from Pakistan and are handspun
by the unique method of softening with soap, then
pulling out the fiber directly into a yarn. This
produces a semi-continuous, extremely strong yarn with a
very long staple (3"+).
They dye beautifully, with colors slightly mute by the
soft undertone of beige. The color is a light silvery
brown, slightly variegated. All are suitable for
knitting, by hand or machine, and for warp. |
